    Technical Overview

A substation battery room is a dedicated, controlled environment designed to house DC battery banks that provide uninterrupted power for critical substation operations. These rooms are essential for ensuring system reliability during AC power outages or switching events.

    Function

The battery room supplies DC power to:
    • Protection relays
    • Control circuits
    • SCADA systems
    • Circuit breaker tripping and closing coils
    • Emergency lighting and alarms
This ensures that vital operations continue even during grid failures or maintenance.

    Design Features

    Battery Type

    • Lead-acid (flooded or VRLA)
    • Nickel-cadmium (Ni-Cd) for high reliability and temperature tolerance

    Rack Configuration

    • Single-layer or multi-layer racks (e.g., 2-tier, 4-tier)
    • Modular frames with acid-resistant coating
    • Clear labeling and spacing for maintenance

    Room Layout

    • Adequate floor space for battery racks, chargers, and DC distribution panels
    • Non-slip acid-resistant flooring
    • Fire-rated doors and cable entry points

    Ventilation & Environment

    • Forced ventilation or exhaust fans to remove hydrogen gas
    • Temperature control (typically 20–25°C)
    • Humidity regulation to prevent corrosion

    Safety Systems

    • Hydrogen detectors and fire alarms
    • Emergency lighting and signage
    • Spill containment trays under each rack
    • Personal protective equipment (PPE) station

    Electrical & Grounding

    • DC System Voltage: Commonly 48V, 110V, or 220V depending on substation size
    • Battery Charger: Float and boost charging modes with automatic switching
    • Grounding: Rack and battery negative terminal bonded to substation earth grid
    • Monitoring: Battery management system (BMS) for voltage, temperature, and health status

    Applicable Standards

    • IEEE 485 – Sizing lead-acid batteries for substations
    • IEEE 1187 – Maintenance of stationary batteries
    • IEC 60896 – Stationary lead-acid batteries
    • IS 1651 / IS 15549 – Indian standards for battery systems
    • NFPA 70E – Electrical safety in the workplace
